What's new about this is that it was imposed from above by the president of the college, and implemented by a department chair who seems a little dense when it comes to the purpose of universities in a free society.

This is nothing new, unfortunately. It's just a college version of what corporate donors have been doing in grammar schools for years... the best example of which is:

The maker of Prego spaghetti sauce donated money to grade schools in exchange for adding a lesson on "viscosity" to its curriculum in which Prego and Rago speghetti sauces are poured through a strainer... the correct interpretation of the lesson is that Prego is thicker... more "viscous." Hence better. Dovetailing nicely with the company's marketing campaign.

Astroturfing is better because it's thickerer!!... (As are Hunter's president and faculty.)
