Today in history? George Orwell’s 1984 was published … June 8, 1949

With President Obama’s reference to 1984 the other day, here is an interesting flashback into how Orwell’s novel was used (in this web-only ad) in support of candidate Obama in his 2008 campaign for the White House.

The ad was actually created by Phil de Vellis, aka ParkRidge47 – a Democratic political consultant.

“Hi. I’m Phil. I did it. And I’m proud of it,” de Vellis said in a Huffington Post article Wednesday night.
Blue State Digital said in a statement that de Vellis had been “terminated” for violating a company policy against “outside political work or commentary on behalf of our clients or otherwise.” De Vellis contradicted that in his Web posting, insisting that he had resigned voluntarily.

  1. Hi, Robert!
    It’s me, Nathasha from Audacity.
I wanted you to know that Animal Farm and 1984 are two of my favorite novels. As a middle school teacher, I make sure we all read Animal Farm.
In today’s world, it’s becoming too close to the real thing.
    Hope you’re doing great!

  2. Hey Nathasha,

Great to hear from you! Yep, 1984 and Animal Farm has had such a profound effect upon cultures all over the world. It should be required reading, so your students had the best of teachers. :o) And I agree, it is becoming too close to being true … and too close for comfort.

Doing well here and hope you’re doing great, too. Thanks again for checking in! Take care.

    Robert
