Observations and Revelations from Social Media

Preparing to get into the swing of things, re: classes, I spent some of the weekend looking around at what is happening in social media. Not too much with direct PR implications, but did find a few interesting news items and activities.
The news of Michael Deaver’s passing was quite sad. Deaver, a master [...]

Memes, memes, memes …. Eight Random Bits

Kelli Matthews, of PRos in Training, and teaching PR at the University of Oregon, has tagged me for the 8 Random Bits meme.
Kelli was tagged by Nedra Weinreich. Nice to meet you Nedra. My iPod is in the truck, so I’ll foresake the song titles, although I like that idea, too. And, [...]

Thinking Bloggers

The most wonderful, and very nice, Susan Getgood has tagged me for a meme making its way around blog world. Thanks, Susan. I haven’t been posting as much lately and this helps me get back in the swing of things.
This is the “Thinking Bloggers” meme, or - as the originator calls it - [...]

Testing JustFree.com’s WordPress and Other Hosting

Interesting new site, JustFree.com. They offer auto installs of WordPress blogs. I created one here: RobAubie and it only took a few minutes. You get a subdomain, but you may also redirect a domain you own to the site. So, it is essentially complete hosting.

Flickr Massage Feels Strange

Flickr is one of my favorite sites. Truly, they have a wonderful interface and hosting service for photos. It is my favorite of all the photo hosting sites - hands down. Yet, tonight the site went down for one of their maintenance “massages” and that’s cool. Hey, I knew it was coming and wasn’t the least bit miffed. I’m still not miffed. But, I think there is a lesson here.

Britt Bravo Believes :: Have Fun, Do Good :: Nonprofit Use of Social Media

While we’re considering nonprofit related blogs, I wanted to to share this recent find - an excellent example. Several students have mentioned working in the nonprofit sector, this semester. One just posted about it. :) So, let’s explore how nonprofits have been using social media in their daily PR and marketing activities. From Oakland, California, we discover a great site. This one will be particularly interesting for those students thinking about a future in nonprofit work.

See What’s Out There :: Nonprofit Blog Exchange

The blog See What’s Out There is our focus for this round of the Nonprofit Blog Exchange from Emily Weinberg. See What’s Out There is the blog of See3 Communications and is an excellent read … go check it out. They do video for nonprofits.

More PRblogs.org Upgrade News :: How To Podcast at PRblogs.org

Podcasting just got a lot easier. And, it is essentially free - except for the time spent creating your content. There is a lot of open source software available to create content, too. The camera for video, well - that’s another story. But, some very good digital camcorders - with hard drives - are available for less than $500. Your cellphone video will do quite well, too.

PRblogs.org Upgrade Complete :: Thanks, James Farmer

Many thanks to James Farmer of edublogs.org for his tireless work over the past few weeks. A complete revamp of the PRblogs.org software platform is essentially finished. I’m still looking around to find any possible quirks that may have arisen. Please feel free to comment with any problems you may encounter. The Flickr plugin is a little goofy right now, for instance. We’ll get it.

Name Change :: Re-branding :: University of Missouri - Rolla

One of my favorite examples for using a blog is where an organization employs them to gain input from their stakeholders. It is particularly rewarding to see dialog, about sometimes sensitive issues, being discussed so openly. I think it shows great transparency - even a bit of bravery - for an institution to [...]

CollegeWebEditor.com Gets ReDesign :: Same Great Writing

For her blog’s second anniversary, Karine Joly chose to update the look of the site. I like it. Visit collegewebeditor.com. Karine’s all about “web, marketing & PR in higher ed.” One of the many things I really like about Karine’s site is the writing. She’s quite good … and very thorough. The site is filled with great tips and news items I’d likely never see without her tireless efforts.
