Too Often News Is Defined As “What Drives Ratings” Not “What Is Newsworthy”

OK, it’s a rant … nothing more. It’s just that the demise of journalism, particularly broadcast journalism on the national stage, breaks my heart. I grew up loving it. Today, there is little of that solid, respectable national broadcast journalism left. The latest hurricane coverage is merely one more saga illustrating how blatant the money grubbing has become.
Julie Moos offered up here views on the “Was the hurricane coverage hyped?” debate that seems to be unstoppable. See The 6 criteria for hype & why Hurricane Irene coverage does not meet ...

New Bio: Example for Student Digital Resume Projects

Preparing to show students how they will build their digital resumes & portfolios … I made a quick demo site. http://bio.aubie.me/
Cost? $7.00 template … $20 for domain & hosting … and less than one hour of editing.
Yes, it still needs more work, but shows how you can put up a simple (and I think, attractive) site with ease.
Your thoughts & suggestions welcome!

How Important Is Social Media for Upcoming Graduates :: Get Prepared

Preparing for Fall semester. I always want something that will help my students realize that social media has become crucial in their chosen profession.
So, this time I created two presentations to illustrate what my students & alums shared today in response to a request on Facebook & on Twitter. What are they doing in their jobs & internships with regard to social media?
Almost 30 have replied so far. I imagine I’ll get more before schools starts in two weeks. Check ‘em out on Storify & Prezi. Many thanks for the ...

PRSA and Jack O’Dwyer Fight … Again!

PR people and PR students will find this interesting. FIGHT! FIGHT! Yes, PRSA and Jack O’Dwyer are at it again. This time, PRSA seeks to play off the Murdoch hacking story to throw the first punch. Actually it is AdAge that is seeking to play off the Murdoch story. But, PRSA implies “hacking” and does make allegations about improper access of the conference call.
It is an interesting use of a common PR ploy … grab the coattails of a breaking story and tag along ...

Storify :: Telling Stories from Social Media Feeds

Storify.com has me just a wee bit fascinated. Telling stories via keyword searches in various social networks: Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, blogs and more.
Here is an example of what people were saying about Auburn’s Spring Graduation 2011. The video at the bottom is an excellent example of stakeholder generated content. (Photo & video via Melanie Foster)

Spring 2011 Digital Resumes and Portfolios

Graduation was today and about half of these students said goodbye to Auburn. The others will graduate at the end of this coming semester.
Always love my students and very proud of them. This group was particularly fun and put in a lot of work on these projects. So, give them a look and offer them a job or internship.
OK, I finally got all the screen shots of each site into the slideshow. ;o)

Message to ‘Retard’ Users – You Will Be Found

Here is a release that got my attention. What do you think of the headline? The lede?
Always interested in any cause related effort, particularly with regard to people with disabilities, I feel this release does a great job of addressing a very PC issue.
They are tracking the use of the words “retard” and “retarded” on Twitter. It is an outing, of sorts.
What do you think? Look at this Twitter search feed for the word “retard” and see just how often it is used.

Longing for a Good Speech

In these days leading up to the November elections, wouldn’t it be refreshing to have a speech delivered like this one … just once. ;o)
Oh, sure … we don’t need the demagogue that comes along with it … but, the speech … well, it would be great to hear.
Even Obama himself couldn’t match this one. Willie Stark (a.k.a. Huey P. Long) at least knew how to come back from defeat and rally the populace.
